SOMETHING IN THE ROOM

After the death of my Grandfather in 2018 I inherited objects that once belonged to my Grandparents. Something in the Room is a contemplative reflection on these objects as signifiers of presence in absence. Light shifts and dapples across these inanimate objects, somehow bringing them, and memories of my grandparents to life. While these objects are significant objects of memory for me, they are not the memories themselves. There is, however, a gravitas about the objects, and their historical and sentimental context, that seems to create a presence of something greater than just the physical presence of the objects in themselves. As memories of what is no longer here and present become almost instilled in the objects that are physically here, the experience of absence and presence become entwined. And while these experiences are caught up in memory and mourning, they are also experiences of time, bound and lived through time.
